Rules: Disable visualization types and features for your team

You might want to restrict the use of some visualization features or visualization types for people in either your whole workspace or in a specific team. You can do so in the Rules settings of either your workspace or a specific team.

You'll also need to be workspace admin or workspace manager. If you're a team manager, you can change these settings for your team only.

Where to set rules

To set rules, go to your Workspace settings.

If you're a workspace admin or manager, you can either set them for the whole workspace (❶ – click on Rules below Configuration) or for a specific team (❷ – click on a specific team to open its settings pages, then click on Rules).

If you're a team manager, you can only set rules for a specific team (❷).

The available restrictions in the Rules page in both the Team and Workspace settings are exactly the same.

Whenever you make changes, you need to click on the Save changes ❸ in the lower right to bring them into effect.

Disabling certain visualization types

On the top of the page, you can disable any of the Datawrapper visualizations types, including maps and tables. To do so, simply untick the visualization types that shouldn't be available for your workspace. In the screenshot below, we deselected all kinds of bar and pie charts:

Once you've disabled some visualization types and clicked on Save changes in the lower right, they will not appear in the chart picker anymore for anyone in your workspace or selected team anymore, including you. If you want to change that and allow workspace admins and managers as well as team manager to use the disabled visualization types, you can turn on All visualization types allowed for Team Manager, Manager and Admin below the vis type selection.

Disabling certain basemaps

When your workspace or team members create a choropleth or symbol map, they can choose between more than 4000 administrative regions as their "basemaps." If there are basemaps that people in your organization shouldn't be using (e.g. because of disputed territories), you can search for them here and disable them:

To allow workspace admins and managers as well as team manager to use the disabled basemaps, turn on All basemaps allowed for Team Manager, Manager and Admin below the basemap selection.

Disabling the Datawrapper themes

No matter if someone creates a chart, map, or table, they'll get the option to change the theme in the Layout tab of step 3: Visualize. If you have a custom theme, then this will always be selected by default. But by default, the five default Datawrapper themes – Datawrapper, Datawrapper (2012), Datawrapper (extended charset), Datawrapper (high contrast), and Pageflow – can be selected by your workspace or team members, too.

To disable everyone in your workspace or team to select those Datawrapper themes, untoggle Default Datawrapper themes in your Rules settings.

To not show the theme selector at all (because you only have one theme that you want people to use), scroll down to Visualization features and disable Layout selector.

Disabling the option to publish on the River

The Datawrapper River is a place to exchange charts and maps with other Datawrapper users. After adding a chart to the River, anyone can use it and customize the chart in Datawrapper before publishing it on their website in their own style. Learn more about it here.

In the Rules settings, you can disable the option for workspace or team members to publish visualizations to the River.

Disabling visualization features in the Layout tab

In the Layout tab of step 3: Visualize in the Datawrapper editor, users can choose if they want to show the Datawrapper attribution, allow chart readers to to download the chart as a PNG, PDF, or SVG, or download the underlying chart data.

In the last section on the Rules page, you can control if your workspace/team members can choose to do so. For example, if you toggle off "Output locale," then the option for choosing the output locale simply won't be visible in the Layout tab.
