Data Vis Dispatch, March 3: Wars, State of the Union, and Pokémon
Welcome back to the 234th edition of Data Vis Dispatch! Every week, we’ll be publishing a collection of the best small and large data visualizations we find, especially from news organizations — to celebrate data journalism, data visualization, simple charts, elaborate maps, and their creators.
Recurring topics this week include the effects of wars, the State of the Union address, and Pokémon.
Last week marked four years since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Monumental losses are still being experienced on both sides of the war. Significant amounts of military aid have been accumulated throughout the duration of the war. However, it appears that people fleeing the war have become less welcome in the EU. Amid growing security concerns, countries are still imposing restrictions or bans on Russian nationals.
The U.S. and Israel's ongoing attacks on Iran are having significant impacts in the Middle East, including on tanker and air traffic. With shipping through the Strait of Hormuz largely halted, ships have been forced to use alternative routes. This has had an impact on global energy supplies, leading to a surge in oil prices.
Although oil spills from tankers have decreased in recent years, environmental health is still being negatively impacted by emissions from coal-fired power plants and water contamination in rivers.
When it comes to environmental protection, coastal cities hold power over ocean protection and monitoring activities that take place in the sea. In an effort to protect their territory, locals are voicing their opposition to Brazil's plan to open up the Tocantins River as a new shipping route. On a more positive note, deforestation is no longer inevitable, with some forest areas even increasing.
Funding is hoped to help meet biodiversity conservation goals, in order to halt and reverse environmental loss. However, there are noticeable gaps, with few countries having made strides towards ending or reversing harmful practices.
Opinion polls are being carried out in preparation for the upcoming elections, which are due to take place in various parts of the world.
Trump's second term has been shaped by his numerous executive orders, ultimately impacting his presidential approval.
Moments of Trump's State of the Union address on February 24 have long since gone viral, with it being the longest speech on record. Four members of the Supreme Court attended Trump’s speech, including the three who ruled against the legality of his tariffs.
We conclude this Data Vis Dispatch on a happier note with some uplifting visualizations. From a map showing people's moments of joy and a digital globe connecting visitors via a single string, to visualisations celebrating Pokémon's 30th anniversary!
